General information

M. R. Štefánik Airport, also called – especially in English – Bratislava Airport or Bratislava-Ivanka, located approximately 9 km northeast of the city center of Bratislava, spanning over the area of three municipalities. It is the main international airport of Slovakia. Shortly after the independence of Slovakia in 1993, it was named after general Milan Rastislav Štefánik, whose aircraft crashed near Bratislava in 1919. The airport is owned and run by Letisko M. R. Štefánika – Airport Bratislava, a.s. (BTS). As of September 2014 the company is fully owned by the Slovak Republic via the Ministry of Transport, Construction and Regional Development.

How many gates does Bratislava airport have?

The current terminal includes 29 check-in desks located on the ground floor of the departures terminal, one of them designated for oversized baggage. In the non-public zones of the waiting area targeted at departing passengers, there are 13 gates, 8 in the Schengen and 5 in the non-Schengen area.

Is Bratislava worth visiting?

Bratislava is definitely worth visiting if you expect to see something new and not expecting much comfort or super touristy attractions like in western europe. Before visiting, you need to understand that it was never meant to be a capital and was not built as one (unlike Prague, Budapest etc).

What did Slovakia used to be called?

Czechoslovakia, Czech and Slovak Československo, former country in central Europe encompassing the historical lands of Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia. Czechoslovakia was formed from several provinces of the collapsing empire of Austria-Hungary in 1918, at the end of World War I.

Can you sleep in Bratislava airport?

Travellers who have slept at this airport report feeling safe and relatively comfortable. Staff and security don't tend to bother sleepers, and there are plenty of armrest-free, three-seat benches that may be conducive to sleeping—some reviewers liked them, while others found them too hard and small.
